Who is like God
Hi! This is John Nemmer again. I would like to talk with you about Saint Michael the Archangel. He is my favorite saint. I picked him for my confirmation name. Now, Saint Michael is our Safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. In the beginning, God made the heavens and the Earth. He also made angels with a free will to love and serve Him. Saint Michael is an angel whose name means “Who is like God”.
Lucifer was called “The Angel of Light”, as he was the most beautiful angel God created. Although many of the angels decided to serve God, some didn’t want to do that when God told all the angels they will serve man. After hearing this, Saint Michael was the first humble angel, who said, “Yes, I will serve You and man”, to God. However, Lucifer couldn’t humble himself to serve humans. In his pride, he decided he would not serve and some of the angels agreed. Then Lucifer and his followers went to God and said, “I want to be my own God. I will not serve You anymore!”
Then the fight between Michael and the fallen angels began. It is said that “Michael” – meaning, “Who is like God” was the war cry against Satan and his fallen angels. Michael, through the power of God, cast into Hell, Satan and all of his followers. Since the fall of Man to the present day, the help of Saint Michael is needed by all Christians. The devil can only do things if God permits him to do so because of free will. God is in control. Satan doesn’t need to be feared. We should pray to Saint Michael when the Devil puts evil thoughts in our minds and tries to lead us into temptation.
Saint Michael is also the protector of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. He is in every Catholic Church, standing guard by the tabernacle, shielding Him from the Evil One. Let us follow Saint Michael’s example of true humility and service, to bring us closer to Jesus. May the love of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the help of the Holy Spirit, and the glory of God the Father be with you all! Amen!
